Isla Mujeres sits five miles off the coast of Cancún, accessible by a twenty-minute ferry crossing that deposits you in a different world entirely. The island is narrow, quiet, and built on a human scale that the Hotel Zone is not. Garrafon Natural Reef Park occupies the southern tip of the island, on a cliff above the Caribbean, and it has been drawing visitors for decades for reasons that become immediately apparent when you arrive. Getting There The ferry from Puerto Juárez runs frequently throughout the day. The crossing takes approximately twenty minutes and costs a few dollars each way. Garrafon is a short taxi or golf cart ride from the ferry terminal on the island's southern end. The park opens at 10am and the last ferry back to Cancún runs in the early evening; plan your day accordingly. The Zip Lines Garrafon operates two zip lines, both of which send you over the reef and the open Caribbean. The second line (longer and higher) ends on a platform rising from the water, from which you swim back to the park. The experience is genuinely thrilling without being extreme, and the view from the launch platform is worth the wait in line on its own. Snorkeling The snorkeling route at Garrafon follows the outer edge of the reef in water that is consistently clear and calm. The reef has been affected by warming and storm damage over the years, as Caribbean reefs broadly have been, but there is still meaningful marine life to observe, sergeant majors, parrotfish, and the occasional sea turtle. Equipment is included in the park admission. The Infinity Pool The park's infinity pool stretches nearly a hundred feet along the cliff edge, its water appearing to merge with the bay beyond. It is one of the more dramatic pool settings in the region, and it functions as the natural gathering point for the afternoon portion of the day, after the zip lines and snorkeling, before the ferry back. Practical Notes Book tickets in advance, particularly during high season. The park includes food and beverages in most ticket packages; confirm what is included when booking. Bring reef-safe sunscreen; conventional sunscreen is prohibited in the water areas. The park is best visited on a weekday if possible; weekend crowds are significantly heavier.
